Sioux City
by Dan Christofferson

"I've never been to Sioux City. I've actually never even been to Iowa. I was pumped about researching a place I'd never been, and, being from Utah, loved finding the citie's connection to their native American heritage. In fact, Iowa is nicknamed 'The Hawkeye state', a momento to a historic leader (Chief Black Hawk), a friend to a local newspaper tycoon. The state plays a very important part in American food production, and the city of Sioux could arguably be seen as the buckle on the American corn belt."

Kansas City
by Kevin Howdeshell

"Sitting down to create this luggage label, I had to sort through a wide variety of iconic Kansas City images from jazz to fountains to barbeque, etc. All of these have a deep root in the culture of my city, however, I chose to depict "The Scout" watching high above our changing landscape. To me, this Sioux Indian on horseback, south of downtown, represents all of the people of Kansas City, crossing all cultures. He sees everyone, and he sees me driving to work everyday. ha!"

Kalamazoo
by Dominic Flask

"I always thought that Kalamazoo was just a fictitious land made up by parents to keep kids minds in imagination land for just a few minutes more while the adults dealt with reality. Turns out it's a city and even a county in Michigan with a population of 75,000 and 325,000 respectively. A buzzing metropolis, Kalamazoo was home to the first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in the US, opened in 1959. The mall still forms the heart of the downtown area, some of the favorite shopping items include t-shirts sporting the slogan 'Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo'."

Baraboo
by Marisa Seguin

"For the past five years, I've lived in Milwaukee, WI which lies about two hours south-east of Baraboo. When I first heard of Baraboo, I thought it sounded like the quintessential middle-of-nowhere town in the best possible way. There are, in fact, several things that Baraboo is famous for, one being that Ringling Bros. Circus was founded here in 1884. The circus wintered here for 34 years until it merged with the Barnum & Bailey Show. The area is now a National Historic Landmark Site and home to Circus World, an expansive museum of circus artifacts."

Alaska
by Teresa Wozniak

"I have never been to Alaska. For me, it's a gigantic, magical place full of gold, dog mushers, volcanoes, salmon, and forest — where sometimes nights last all day, and days last all night. Growing up at the foot of the Rockies, I've always loved mountains, and I miss them terribly. Hopefully I'll be able to see them again in the future; to go home, go north, and go see Alaska."

Nebraska
by Evan Huwa

"I was lucky enough to have grown up on a dairy farm right on the stateline between Colorado and Nebraska, just under the panhandle. I could literally throw a stone from my front doorstep and have it land in Nebraska. Though I grew up on the Colorado side, Nebraska holds a very special place in my heart. My family had farm ground in Nebraska so many of my formative years were spent baling hay, setting water, and cutting corn with my dad.

The state slogan is on the Nebraska welcome sign as you cross the border. So naturally I decided to spotlight the saying in my luggage tag. I saw that sign everyday, so the saying is ingrained in my mind. Fun fact: the saying was developed in the 70's by an ad agency in Omaha. It still stands today.

My wife is also from this great state, Lincoln to be exact. We got married in beautiful Nebraska City, home of Arbor Day for those that keep track of that kind of stuff. So its safe to say that I will always love this state!"
